The first generation problem

One risk I don’t hear discussed very often isn’t scientific.

It’s commercial.

History suggests the first successful version of almost any major technology is rarely the version that dominates.

Think about computers.

Mobile phones.

Wind turbines.

Solar panels.

The first commercially successful designs proved the concept.

The second and third generations made them economically compelling.

Fusion may follow the same path.

The first commercial fusion power station could easily become the equivalent of an early mainframe computer.

A remarkable engineering achievement.

But perhaps expensive to build.

Expensive to maintain.

Complex to operate.

And rapidly surpassed by improved designs only a decade later.

That creates an interesting investment risk.

Imagine spending £20 billion constructing the world’s first commercial fusion station.

By the time it enters full operation, a newer reactor design may already produce:

  • More electricity
  • Higher availability
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Better fuel efficiency
  • Simpler construction
  • Lower operating costs

The original plant would still work.

It just might no longer be the most competitive design.

Insurance beyond engineering

Most energy technologies worry about fire.

Flood.

Mechanical failure.

Business interruption.

Fusion introduces another category.

Technology obsolescence.

Insurers and investors won’t simply be asking:

“Will this reactor operate safely?”

They’ll also be asking:

“Will it still be commercially competitive thirty years from now?”

That’s a remarkably difficult question to answer when the entire industry is still being invented.

The strategic lesson

Every major energy transition has produced winners and losers.

Some coal stations lasted seventy years.

Others closed after twenty.

Some early nuclear reactor designs spread across the world.

Others became technological dead ends.

Fusion is unlikely to be any different.

The first commercial reactor may become legendary.

Not because it was the best.

But because it was the one brave enough to prove the idea worked.
